Global School Brooklyn: Where Language and Culture Bring Us Together

New York, USA September 25, 2026

Every language has its own unique expressions and idioms that wonderfully reflect the diverse cultural values of the communities who speak it. By mastering these nuanced elements of language, students can foster a deep understanding and appreciation for one another’s backgrounds and experiences.

At Global SchoolBrooklyn, students come together to learn, play, and grow within a rich tapestry of languages and cultures. Imagine a lunchtime conversation where students share their travel plans to visit their grandparents for Nochevieja or discuss who has the better snack, a brezel or banana. These everyday exchanges offer opportunities to go beyond the classroom and instead become a natural part of daily life both inside and outside the classroom.

These shared experiences are deepened by the language, culture, and community that make GSB unique. Each year, our Tacoberfest celebration connects our family and community on Governors Island for an afternoon of music, food and festivities to celebrate German- and Spanish-speaking cultures and traditions. Closer to home, Extra Sandwich Friday, a parent-led initiative, makes it easy for families to donate supplies to CHiPS, a local community organization supporting neighbors in need.

Our students also get involved in the community through the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP), in which students complete a Community Project focused on identifying a need within a community and taking meaningful action to address it. Through this process, students strengthen their critical-thinking, research and communication skills while learning to approach challenges with empathy, initiative and a sense of responsibility. They discover how raising awareness of endangered birds through the Audubon Society or discussing the downsides of factory farming can cause real-world change.

Language opens doors to new friendships, enriching experiences and a world of possibilities. By cultivating a sense of belonging where open communication, mutual respect and shared experiences bring people together, we create opportunities to build lasting connections and develop a deeper understanding of one another.
