WASCO COUNTY, Ore.\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b>\u00a0February\u00a03, 2026\u00a0<\/span><\/b>\u2014<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>Avangrid, Inc., a leading energy company and member of the Iberdrola Group,\u00a0today announced it has\u00a0achieved commercial operations at two\u00a0new\u00a0solar projects in Wasco County, Oregon\u00a0\u2013\u00a0Daybreak\u00a0Solar and\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0Solar \u2013\u00a0both of which will deliver energy to the Portland General Electric (PGE) power grid.\u00a0Daybreak\u00a0Solar, with a\u00a0capacity of 189\u00a0Megawatts\u00a0DC\u00a0(140\u00a0MWac),\u00a0and\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0Solar, with\u00a0a capacity of 80\u00a0MWdc\u00a0(60\u00a0MWac),\u00a0represent\u00a0new, domestic capacity that will support\u00a0growing demand for electricity and\u00a0bolster the region\u2019s energy availability and reliability.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cCompleting these two projects marks the latest milestone in a pivotal investment in Wasco County, bringing new jobs, modern infrastructure, and a more resilient power grid for Oregon,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Avangrid CEO Jose Antonio Miranda<\/span><\/b>. \u201cTogether with PGE and Intel, we\u2019re delivering a new source of reliable power that will energize Oregon\u2019s communities and industries for decades to come.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Avangrid installed a combined 650,000 solar panels at\u00a0Daybreak\u00a0and\u00a0Bakeoven, which are\u00a0located\u00a0adjacent to\u00a0each other.\u00a0Together, the projects are expected to produce hundreds of gigawatt-hours of electricity annually, strengthening grid reliability and supporting\u00a0growing commercial and industrial demand. Construction supported over 300 construction jobs, filled\u00a0mainly by\u00a0local union\u00a0labor.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Avangrid\u00a0estimates the\u00a0two projects\u00a0will\u00a0generate\u00a0approximately\u00a0$40 million in tax revenue over their life span. The\u00a0projects\u00a0also support\u00a0several permanent, full-time jobs for the ongoing operation and maintenance of the facilities, adding to the local employment base.\u00a0Daybreak\u00a0and\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0are the first commercial-scale solar projects\u00a0built\u00a0in Wasco County.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur region has a history of energy production, and now we are finding other ways to harness our abundant regional resources like the Eastern Oregon sunshine and Columbia Gorge Winds to meet growing demand from the new ways we are using electricity,\u201d\u00a0<\/span>said Phil Brady, Wasco County Commissioner.<\/span><\/b>\u00a0\u201cThe Daybreak and\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0facilities will help meet our growing demand while contributing to our local economy and supporting our local tax districts such as the Wasco County Library and the Deschutes Rim Health Clinic.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The facilities are delivering\u00a0electricity\u00a0to PGE\u2019s grid through\u00a0<\/span>Green Future Impact<\/span><\/a>\u00a0(GFI), a voluntary program designed to help large municipal, commercial, and industrial customers like Intel meet their\u00a0ambitious sustainability and carbon reduction\u00a0ambitions\u00a0through the development of new clean energy facilities in the region.\u00a0PGE\u2019s GFI program lets large customers choose non-emitting energy without increasing costs for other customers. All customers\u00a0benefit\u00a0from the energy, but program participants pay the extra cost of the clean energy they select.\u00a0Avangrid is the leading supplier of\u00a0electricity\u00a0to PGE\u2019s GFI program through projects like\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0Solar, Daybreak Solar,\u00a0<\/span>Pachw\u00e1ywit Fields Solar<\/span><\/a>, and\u00a0<\/span>Tower Solar<\/span><\/a>, which is currently under construction in Morrow County.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBy strengthening the energy infrastructure our\u00a0operations depend\u00a0on, these projects help meet growing electricity demand, advance\u00a0Intel\u2019s goal of\u00a0achieving\u00a0100% renewable electricity across our\u00a0global\u00a0operations by\u00a02030, and\u00a0deliver lasting economic and environmental benefits for Wasco County and the broader region,\u201d said\u00a0<\/span>Madison West, Global Head of Sustainability, Intel<\/span><\/b>. \u201cDaybreak and\u00a0Bakeoven\u00a0demonstrate the kind of\u00a0regional collaboration needed to bring new, utility-scale\u00a0renewable capacity online\u00a0–\u00a0supporting\u00a0local jobs,\u00a0improving grid resilience,\u00a0and\u00a0helping ensure\u00a0Oregon\u00a0is well positioned for future growth.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthering its commitment to supporting the local and regional economies, Avangrid has partnered with a fifth-generation Oregon sheep rancher to graze\u00a0approximately 3,000\u00a0sheep\u00a0at both projects, a vegetation management method known as Solar Grazing.\u00a0Sheep are\u00a0good at\u00a0moving around solar\u00a0panels to eat grass and weeds,\u00a0limiting vegetation\u00a0growth\u00a0and cutting down on wildfire risks during the Pacific Northwest\u2019s hot and dry summers.\u00a0This\u00a0represents\u00a0an expansion of Avangrid\u2019s solar grazing operation\u00a0<\/span>already in place at two other solar projects in the region.<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
