Learn how to stop,\u00a0improve\u00a0and reinvent what you do through human-machine collaboration.<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233117&quot;:true,&quot;134233118&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Good news: generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) may replace your job \u2014 the old tasks, that is, and in the process\u00a0help\u00a0you put your old job back together in radically reimagined new ways.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">While\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iese.edu\/insight\/articles\/artificial-intelligence-ai-impact-knowledge-jobs\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">AI\u2019s ultimate impact on the labor market is uncertain<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, we know that it has not yet triggered widespread job destruction. In fact,\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com\/gx\/en\/issues\/artificial-intelligence\/job-barometer\/2025\/report.pdf\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">PwC\u2019s\u202f2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202f\u2014 which analyzed\u00a0nearly a\u00a0billion job postings and thousands of company financial reports \u2014 found that employment and wages are increasing across\u00a0almost every\u00a0AI-exposed occupation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Still, AI will reshape work and organizations in profound ways. To understand how AI may substitute or complement your work,\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0useful to consider your role as a system of tasks, some of them core, which differentiate you from everyone else, and some non-core, which are more standard. Core tasks will be more difficult to substitute with AI, while non-core tasks may lend themselves to substitution.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What\u2019s\u00a0important is that you radically reimagine your work, a process I call \u201chacking yourself.\u201d When I run this exercise with executives, we divide the activity into two phases with\u00a0different roles: the architect and the builder. Offload these to the technology. Imagine your job in the\u00a0future, and\u00a0imagine the new things that you could do with technology. You need to reformulate the basic hypothesis of your job. What have you never dared to do?<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In each of these areas, you should\u00a0identify\u00a0the pain points and the elements that add value. Define in detail the specific tasks generative AI will need to do, and the context and data it will need to do them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Start experimenting with AI \u2014 independently<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The second phase is the building phase.\u00a0You\u2019ll\u00a0need access to an advanced generative AI tool such as ChatGPT or Claude. Begin experimenting. Once executives do this, new use cases tend to\u00a0emerge\u00a0quickly, revealing where AI can deliver real value.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0using ChatGPT, the options at present are\u00a0essentially four: creating a prompt, project,\u00a0assistant\u00a0or agent. Prompting is the most basic, one that most of us know by now, and is a matter of learning to include the right context and information for one-time interactions that produce useful responses. Creating an agent is the most ambitious\u00a0option, because\u00a0it executes tasks, connects to data sources, runs\u00a0code\u00a0or uses external systems. Agents can automate multi-step workflows.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As\u00a0an initial\u00a0exercise, many executives find that creating a project or custom GPT is most within reach. Projects are\u00a0useful for\u00a0when\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0looking to organize work,\u00a0files\u00a0or ongoing conversations around a specific issue. Multiple steps or documents are involved. A custom GPT creates a GPT for repeated use and automation, and allows you to define the tone,\u00a0rules\u00a0and knowledge base, creating something like an assistant.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This part can be daunting because you will do it without the help of the IT department, at least initially. AI\u2019s rapid evolution requires individual experimentation before institutional adoption. Some experiments will fail; others will boost only personal productivity. A few will be worth sharing with your team. And a small percentage will be worth scaling, at which point IT can help formalize and expand them.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">If the first iteration falls short, refine it. Experimentation is integral to mastery.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This mindset can be uncomfortable for leaders accustomed to structured processes or who leave experimentation to entrepreneurs or techies. Yet this is the nature of the new technological wave \u2014 it demands adaptability and experimentation.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Build a culture of AI innovation and measure it<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Starting in this way matters, because relying solely on top-down initiatives often yields solutions that\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0very useful\u00a0to most employees or that underperform existing standard large-language models (LLMs).<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For instance,\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/pdf\/2305.05862%22%20\/t%20%22_blank\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">BloombergGPT, a 50-billion-parameter model, was shown to lag behind ChatGPT on many financial tasks,<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u202fdespite Bloomberg\u2019s data and technology might.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The role of the organization must be to influence, not impose.\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.iese.edu\/insight\/articles\/innovation-culture-managers-creativity\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">Organizational culture matters in innovation<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, and managers are key to creating an environment of openness and experimentation. Employees must know that they have the license to experiment, especially since GenAI is a\u00a0general purpose\u00a0technology that\u00a0doesn\u2019t\u00a0come with a specific use case.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This experimentation, however, should be structured. Establish clear metrics and KPIs. If AI reduces your email time from 60 to 50 minutes, capture that 10-minute gain. If 80% of translations are automated, measure the cost savings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Equally important is transparency. In many organizations, employees use AI informally. Leaders should normalize open\u00a0discussion\u00a0about AI experiments and create incentives to share learnings.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Most organizations will need to pair this bottom-up innovation with\u00a0top-down strategy. While individuals explore ways to enhance their work, leadership must evaluate how AI can reshape the broader business model. Both approaches should progress in tandem.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In September 2025, OpenAI released a\u202f<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cdn.openai.com\/pdf\/a253471f-8260-40c6-a2cc-aa93fe9f142e\/economic-research-chatgpt-usage-paper.pdf?utm_source=substack&amp;utm_medium=email\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">study on how people were using ChatGPT<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Work-related usage had fallen to 27% of all usage, from 47% a year earlier. Writing \u2014 the automated production of emails and documents, along with editing,\u00a0summarizing\u00a0and translating \u2014 was by far the most common use case at work. Much of that is the \u201cstop doing things\u201d and \u201cdo things better\u201d phases.
